Manners Matter: Be a good listener

a dog sits with its legs all forward, head cocked, very alert. Caption reads "Go ahead, I'm listening."

This week's manner is "be a good listener".

"Having this skill can really set you apart. Good listeners are better learners, better friends, ad better employees. They allow others to feel valued and can facilitate understanding. Really listening isn't always easy or natural, but it is worth practicing."

Some ways to be a good listener include:

-Face the speaker.

-Put your phone down.

-Make eye contact.

-Nod.

-Don't interrupt.

-Don't judge or jump to conclusions.

-Don't start planning what to say next.

-Stay focused.

-Ask questions.

-Paraphrase or summarize what someone has said so you are sure you understand.

From Brooke Romney's book "52 Modern Manners for Today's Teens". We are focusing on one manner per week at school this year.
